Sprint-Distance Race [Overview Map] [Transition Area Map]
Swim: The swim is 400 meters (8 lengths of the pool). Swimmers will enter at the southeast-most lane of the pool, swim one length (50 meters), and move to the next lane. Swimmers must stay on the right and pass on the left. [Leg Map] [GPX]
Bike: The bike is 20K in length with 2 turnaround points. It starts at the intersection of Bullock and El Camino Real, exiting the transition area, next to the pool. It proceeds west on Bullock, turns around the New Mexico Tech campus on Olive, turns west on the golf course road, and then north on the Escondida road to the first turnaround point at the I-25 underpass. The course returns to the EMRTC building, where it turns west for approximately 2 miles to the second turnaround point. The return course goes directly to the transition area. Run: The run is a 5K course, with 1 turnaround. Starting at the transition area, near the intersection of Bullock and El Camino Real, it proceeds north on El Camino Real for a little less than a mile, where it turns west (left) onto Newberry Road for an out-and-back leg, returning east back to El Camino Real. After turning south along El Camino Real, it continues south to Coulson where it turns and heads west until Avenida Ladera. The course turns southward on Ladera and then prompty turns back to the east on Loma Encantada. It follows Loma Encatada until it turns south once it reaches El Camino Real. Sprint Triathlon Each racer must provide the time that they expect to take to finish the 400-meter swim. The start order will be assigned according to the seed times, with the fastest seed going first. The start order is also subject to the judgement of the Race Committee, and may be based on past performance.
The order will be posted at packet pickup on Friday, August 3. Timing officials will start swimmers approximately every five to fifteen seconds, as needed to maintain good spacing.
USA Triathlon members must present their USAT membership cards in order to avoid the $10 one-day membership fee.
To prevent unauthorized transfers, we require that the registration staff confirm that the person who signs the race waiver is actually the person racing. You must present photo ID (a driver's license or other positive identification) to be allowed to race.

The online entry fee for the sprint-distance race before Wednesday, May 2 is $20 for 23-Under, $45 for solo adults, and $75 for relays. From May 2 through July 27: $20 for 23-Under, $55 for solo adults, and $105 for relays. From July 28 through close of registration: $20 for 23-Under, $65 for solo adults, and $135 for relays. Those who register online are not required to sign the waiver at packet pickup. Please use this time-saving method of registration!
Participants who are not USA Triathlon members must include an additional $10 one-day USAT membership fee. Each relay team member not belonging to USAT must include the fee. For example, if two relay members are USAT members, then add $20 to the total fee ($75+$10+$10=$95). Online registration takes care of this automatically, but you must do the math if you're sending in the forms.
USAT members must present their membership cards at packet pickup to avoid the one-day membership fee.
A $25 fee will be charged if a racer does not return a rented timing chip.

Note: the youth races are competetive races sanctioned under the standard USAT rules.
All ages are as of December 31, 2012 ("racing age"):
We have been asked to allow younger athletes to compete, but we will not allow anyone under the racing age of 7 years to race.
All youth races will start at the New Mexico Tech Swim Center [map]. Races will be held entirely on the New Mexico Tech campus.
At the discretion of the race director (excessive heat, weather, etc.), the course may be shortened to the following distances:
There is always a chance of afternoon and evening rains in August. Our plan is to hold the entire race if the pool is open for swimming. If not, and lightning is not a danger, we can change the course to a duathlon, with a short run at the start in place of the swim. If the race cannot be started before 7:00 pm, we must cancel the race.
