Course

Sprint-Distance Race [Overview Map] [Transition Area Map]

Swim: The swim is 400 meters (8 lengths of the pool). Swimmers will enter at the southeast-most lane of the pool, swim one length (50 meters), and move to the next lane. Swimmers must stay on the right and pass on the left. [Leg Map]

Bike: The bike is 20K in length with 2 turnaround points. It starts at the intersection of Bullock and El Camino Real, exiting the transition area, next to the pool. It proceeds west on Bullock, turns around the New Mexico Tech campus on Olive, turns west on the golf course road, and then north on the Escondida road to the first turnaround point at the I-25 underpass. The course returns to the EMRTC building, where it turns west for approximately 2 miles to the second turnaround point. The return course goes directly to the transition area. [Overview Map]

Run: The run is a 5K course, with 1 turnaround. Starting at the transition area, near the intersection of Bullock and El Camino Real, it proceeds north on El Camino Real for a little less than a mile, where it turns west (left) onto Newberry Road for an out-and-back leg, returning east back to El Camino Real. After turning south along El Camino Real, it continues south to Coulson where it turns and heads west until Avenida Ladera. The course turns southward on Ladera and then prompty turns back to the east on Loma Encantada. It follows Loma Encatada until it turns south once it reaches El Camino Real. It then heads south until the finish at the transition area. [Overview Map]

Location

The race starts and ends at the Socorro City Pool. To get there, take I-25 to Exit 150 (California St.). Take the first right past the first stoplight (Francisco de Avondo), and park in the parking lot of Parkview Elementary School, on the north side of the street from Sedillo Park. The Socorro City Pool is at the southwest corner of Sedillo Park.

Awards

Awards will be given to the top three overall finishers in the sprint triathlon, male and female. In addition, the top three finishers in each of the following categories, male and female, will receive awards (there will be no duplication of awards):

An awards ceremony will follow the conclusion of the sprint triathlon, at approximately 9:30AM.

Relay teams having two members will be judged in the same category as relays with three members.

Seeded, Time-Trial-Style Swim Start

Sprint Triathlon Each racer must provide the time that they expect to take to finish the 400-meter swim. The start order will be assigned according to the seed times, with the fastest seed going first. The start order is also subject to the judgement of the Race Committee, and may be based on past performance.

The order will be posted at packet pickup on August 6. Swimmers will be started approximately every five to fifteen seconds. The starters will use their best judgement in the spacing of swimmers.

Packet and ChampionChip Pickup

USA Triathlon members must present their USAT membership cards in order to avoid the $10 one-day membership fee.

To prevent unauthorized transfers, we require that the registration staff confirm that the person who signs the race waiver is actually the person racing. You must present photo ID (a driver's license or other positive identification) to be allowed to race.

August 6, 4:00-8:00 PM

Socorro Swim Center:  Packet pickup and registration under the tent at the north end of the parking lot.  USAT members must provide proof of current USAT membership (e.g., membership cards) to avoid the $10 one-day membership charge. All racers must provide positive proof of identity.

Entry Fees

There is no race day registration!

The online entry fee for the sprint-distance race is $45 for adults (23-Over), $20 for Under-23, and $75 for relays. Late fees apply after July 9 for 23-Over (+$10) and Relay (+$15). Those who register online are not required to sign the waiver at packet pickup. Please use this time-saving method of registration!

Participants who are not USA Triathlon members must include an additional $10 one-day USAT membership fee. Each relay team member not belonging to USAT must include the fee. For example, if two relay members are USAT members, then add $20 to the total fee ($75+$10+$10=$95). Online registration takes care of this automatically, but you must do the math if you're sending in the forms.

USAT members must present their membership cards at packet pickup to avoid the one-day membership fee.

An discount of $1 will be given if the racer provides their own ChampionChip. A $25 fee will be charged if a racer does not return a rented ChampionChip.

Rules

All USA Triathlon rules apply, including:

  1. CPSC-approved hard-shell helmets must be worn by all participants.
  2. Participants under the age of 18 must have a waiver signed by a parent or guardian.
  3. Following the traffic rules are the responsibility of the participant.
  4. It is the responsibility of the participant to know the course.
  5. Anyone guilty of cutting off other participants or causing an accident by overly agressive or irresponsible behavior will be disqualified.
  6. Entry numbers must be worn on the front.
  7. Anyone guilty of discourteous or aggressive conduct in the pool will be subject to a variable time penalty or disqualification.
  8. Swimmers must touch the wall at the end of each pool length.
  9. Relay athletes must transfer their ChampionChip in the transition area.

Rain, Lightning Plans

There is always a chance of afternoon and evening rains in August. Our plan is to hold the entire race if the pool is open for swimming. If not, and lightning is not a danger, we can change the course to a duathlon, with a short run at the start in place of the swim. If the race cannot be started before 7:00 pm, we must cancel the race.

Fees: There is no race entry fee. A USAT membership fee of $5 will be collected at registration if the athlete is not a current member.

Registration: All registration for the youth race will be on paper, not online (to avoid the Active.com fee on a race that we're not charging for.) Click here to download the Chile Harvest Youth Triathlon registration form. Registration will also be available at the race.

All registrations must be signed by a parent or guardian. No exceptions. Registration ends at 5:45 pm!

Packet Pickup: At the New Mexico Tech Swim Center, starting at 5:00 PM, Friday, August 6. Be on time for bike racking and body marking. Registration ends at 5:45 pm!
